Continue reading “चाईबासा के दंगे: क्यों और कैसे”

RSS: The Communal Dragon

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was founded in Nagpur on October 20, 1925 by Dr KB Hedgewar. Dr Hedgewar, and later on its present Sar Sangh Chalak, Guru MS Golwalkar, always looked upon the princely state as the happy hunting ground for their work. The RSS began to cast its net in the States of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh some time in 1943-44. Continue reading “RSS: The Communal Dragon”

Growth of RSS in Ranchi After ’67 Riots

A RSS drill in progress

NK SINGH

The RSS is now-a-days very active in Ranchi city where it has occupied parks, playgrounds, and school grounds for daily shakhas.

In the Heavy EngineeringCorporation the development of the RSS has been extraordinary. Before the communal riots there were only a few members, but now in the HEC the number of the “Swaymsewaks” is near three thousand. Continue reading “Growth of RSS in Ranchi After ’67 Riots”

BJP faces huge anti-incumbency in MP assembly election

NK SINGH

Continue reading “भाजपा का समृद्ध मध्य प्रदेश कैंपेन याद दिलाता है शाइनिंग इंडिया की”

When Supreme Court defined Hindutava as a way of life

Hindutva: Back on the agenda

NK SINGH

“When we say this is the Hindu nation, there are some who immediately come up with the question, ‘What about the Muslims and Christians dwelling in this land?’… But the crucial question is whether they remember that they are the children of this soil. No! Together with the change in their faith, gone is the spirit of love and devotion for the nation. They have also developed a feeling of identification with the enemies of this land. They look to some foreign lands as their holy places. It is not merely a case of change of faith, but a change even in national identity.”

-Guru Golwalkar, former RSS chief, in his treatise, Bunch of Thoughts.

Is Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi’s grand dream of ruling India’s first “Hindu state” any different from the Hindu nation of the RSS, in which the minorities are identified with the “enemies of the nation”? Does Joshi disagree with Shiv Sena boss Bal Thackeray, who promised during an election campaign that with the Shiv Sena in power everybody will have to take diksha (initiation) into the Hindu religion?

The Supreme Court apparently thinks so. In a landmark judgement last fortnight, it absolved Joshi of the charge of garnering votes in the name of Hindutva by ruling that his promise to establish the first “Hindu state” did not amount to appealing for votes in the name of religion. It also said that Hindutva and Hinduism are a way of life and not confined to religion, and therefore, its use in a speech did not amount to corrupt electoral practices. Bhopal, the new lab of Hindutva

NK SINGH

Bhopal, the new lab of Hindutva

Indian Express 7 May 2019

The BJP has made Bhopal the epicentre of its Hindutva ideology by fielding terror-accused Pragya Singh Thakur as its candidate for Bhopal Lok Sabha seat.

A BJP bastion for the past 30 years, Bhopal has suddenly become the venue of one of the most interesting electoral and ideological battles in the country.

Thakur’s candidature took even many by surprise. The BJP has no dearth of tall leaders in Madhya Pradesh to challenge Digvijaya Singh, the Congress candidate from Bhopal who was the state’s chief minister for a decade. Continue reading “Bhopal, the new lab of Hindutva”

A bottle of Old Monk and the mystery of midnight tryst

NK SINGH

For me, Kushabhau Thakre, the former BJP president, would always remain the embodiment of all that is good in the RSS. The man who built the BJP from a stretch in MP was known for his Spartan lifestyle. Like most RSS wholetimers, he was a bachelor.

When I first met him in early 80s, he used to live in a small room that opened on a noisy street in a building that housed the BJP office in old Bhopal. That small room served as his bedroom, office, visitor’s room, dining and guest room.

The furniture conisted of a wooden cot, a couple of chairs and an earthen pitcher (ghada) for drinking water. He used to share a table fan with his neighbour, Kailash Sarang, the office secretary, whose family would use it whenever Thakre did not need it.

Some time he would invite me for lunch to that room. The food, a very simple affair, came in a thali from Sarang’s house. This was the life style of a man who could make or unmake a chief minister.

Hence, my eyes nearly popped out when I met Eknath Gore, a Sangh parivar activist, at Bhopal that winter morning in the early 90s. I had gone to meet ex-CM VK Sakhlecha at his office at Nisarga hotel in Bhopal’s MP Nagar area.

Continue reading “ओल्ड मोंक की बोतल और आधी रात की मुलाक़ात”

Can RSS rescue BJP in MP election?

DB Post 29 Oct 18

NK SINGH

The BJP leadership in Madhya Pradesh has received a rap on the knuckles from the RSS bosses on the eve of state assembly election. Samidha, the Sangh headquarters at Bhopal, apparently received disturbing reports about anti-incumbency against the BJP.

Many sitting MLAs, including ministers, face resentment in their constituencies due to poor performance. The party leadership failed to gauge the intensity of the movement against the SC/ST Act. Many sections of voters are unhappy.

The strategy of raking up the Congress regime’s failures is not proving so effective this time. The BJP’s goal of achieving 200 plus seat looks like a dream as it struggles to return to power for  record fourth term.

The past week saw frenzied activities in the RSS as it started a damage control exercise. BJP chief Amit Shah visited the Sangh headquarters to receive feedback from the parent organisation. It was followed by several rounds of marathon meetings between the leaders of the two organisations.  Continue reading “Can RSS rescue BJP in MP election?”
